Judokas medal on provincial mats

Judokas Grace Northrop and Lavanna Laass tuned up for the Canada Winter Games with a pair of gold medals at the Youth Provincials in Langley on Saturday. Northrop and Laass, whose home club is the Hart Judo Academy, qualified to compete for Team B.C.

Northrop and Laass, whose home club is the Hart Judo Academy, qualified to compete for Team B.C. at the Canada Winter Games that begin Saturday.

At youth provincials, Northrop won gold in the under-18 minus-52 kilogram division, while Laass sparred to gold in the U21 -63kg division.

Their HJA teammate Kimiko Kamstra grabbed gold in the U16 -44kg class.

Earning silver medals for the Hart Judo Academy were Isaac Kamstra in the U14 -36kg division and Lorna Jane Simmons in the U16 -57kg class.

Bronze medallists included Hamish Lamoureux in U14 novice boys, Elizabeth Simmons in U12 -34 kgs, Christopher Cormack in U14 -55 kgs

and Kurtis Cormack in U16 -60 kgs.

Along with athletes from the Hart Judo Academy, the Prince George Judo Club and North Capital Judo Club also sent competitors to youth provincials.

Representing PGJC were Kyle Wilkinson who won silver in the U21 -60kgs division and bronze in U18 -60kgs.

Branden Edwards topped the podium with gold in U16 -60kg gold, and finished fifth in U18 -60kgs.

Lisa Russell sparred to silver in U18 -52kg, while Levi Price earned a bronze medal in U16 -66kg.

In U14, Tami Goto won a gold medal and Sydney Edgson earned bronze. medal

In U12, Kyra Edgson earned gold, while Fallon Jones won silver.

The North Capital Judo Club had four judokas compete at youth provincials.

Lochlan Young won silver, while his brothers Asher and Maxwell sparred to bronze medals.

Nicolas Richards also competed.

The next event for three judokas from Prince George is the Canada Winter Games.

Laass and Northrop will be on the mats on Feb. 25 at the Northern Sport Centre, while Kristen Yawney from the Prince George Judo Club will compete on Feb. 26.
