Several members from the local judo clubs - Prince George Judo Club, North Capital Judo Club and the Hart Judo Academy competed at the Edmonton International Judo tournament, April 5-7, at the Ice Palace at West Edmonton Mall and returned home with a wealth of experience and a few medals. There were more than 700 competitors in Edmonton for the tournament from across Canada, the United States and Japan.
Prince George Judo Club competitors were - Sydney Edgson, gold in under-11 -36 kg; Bryce Hayashi, gold, under-11 -36 kg; Tami Goto, gold, under-13 -32 kg; Josh Price, fourth, under-13 -38 kg; Taylor Schaus, silver, under-15 -38 kg; Levi Price, fourth, under-15 -55 kg; and Lisa Russell, bronze, under-18 -52 kg.
North Capital Judo Club competitors were - Gabe Sakamoto, gold, under-nine boys -23kg; Haven Dunphy, gold, under-11 boys +45kg; Paul Zorzi, gold, veteran men 1974-1978 -73kg; Asher Young, silver, under-11 boys -27kg; Maxwell Young, silver, under-13 boys -38kg; Danny White, silver, veteran men 1964-1968 -73kg; Miles Wood, bronze, under-11 boys -30kg; Shayla White, bronze, under-13 girls -32kg; Ian Kim, bronze, under-13 boys -55kg and Shawn Young, bronze, veteran men 1969-1973 -73kg.
Also competing for North Capital were Lochlan Young, Simon Zorzi, Devin White, Quinn Dunphy, Kalem Zwiers, Elijah Zwiers and Atley Miller.
Eric Halsall was unable to attend the Edmonton International tournament with his teammates because he was competing in Saskatoon at the wrestling nationals where he placed sixth in the -69kg division.
Hart Judo Academy competitors were - Matthias Schenk, gold, under-13 boys -34 kg; Dakota Chang, gold, under-11 boys Group 3; Isaac Kamstra, gold, under-11 boys Group 4; Gabriel Paterson, gold, under-11 boys Group 5; Kimiko Kamstra, silver, under-13 girls -32 kg; Matthew Grilz, silver, under-13 boys -55 kg; Brendan Bellavance, silver, under-18 boys -90 kg; Taylor Rowland, bronze, under-15 girls -57 kg; Grace Northrop, bronze, under-18 girls -52 kg; and
Lavanna Laass, bronze, under-18 girls -63 kg.
