Two judokas from Prince George strutted to silver and bronze medals at the Canadian championship, July 5-8.

Kristen Yawney, of the Prince George Judo Club, returned from the 2012 Canadian Judo Championship in Toronto with her third national medal, this time a silver in the girls under-17, -57 kilograms category. Yawney posted a 3-1 record.

The Hart Judo Academy's Lavanna Laass won the bronze medal in the girls under-17, -57 kilograms category with a 4-1 record.

Judo BC head coach and the head instructor at the Hart Bruce Kamstra said his pupil has always had the skills but was never able to put a solid routine together until now.

"She made a huge leap in her confidence and mental preparation in order to step on the podium," said Kamstra.

Some of Prince George's judokas are at a national training camp with more than 200 countries top athletes until Thursday. Kamstra is one of the provincial coaches leading the lessons.
