Players intent on being members of the 2016-17 Cariboo Cougars will start a three-day evaluation camp today at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

The Cougars skate in the B.C. Hockey Major Midget League and will host the 2017 Telus Cup national championship tournament. With nationals on the calendar, the competition for roster spots should be fierce. In total, 40 players received invitations to the camp. Half that number will form the active roster.

Today's first ice session is for goalies and starts at 6 p.m. On Saturday, practices will be held at 10 and 11 a.m., while games are set for 2 and 6 p.m.

On Sunday, a 10 a.m. game will be followed by exit interviews and meetings.

The 15- to 17-year-old Cougars will start their pre-season schedule with a Sept. 8 game in Chase against the Thompson Blazers. The next three days, they'll be in Kelowna for games against the Okanagan Hockey Academy, Vancouver Northeast Chiefs, South Delta and the Burnaby Winter Club.

The Cougars will play a 40-game regular season, followed by playoffs. The Telus Cup is slated for late April.
