Jewell jolted

Logan Jewell had a rough ride and a short night in Agassiz.

Logan Jewell had a rough ride and a short night in Agassiz.

The local stock car driver was on track for the ARCA OK Tire Sportsman Series Mertin GM Performance Parts 100 on Saturday but was involved in a multiple-car pileup in the early stages of the race and wasn't able to continue. As faster cars were working their way through lapped traffic, leader Brent Morris was spun sideways a short distance ahead of the hard-charging Jewell. Unfortunately, Jewell had no time to react and nowhere to go and slammed into Morris's front end. Meanwhile, Sarah Cornett-Ching slowed down and went high to try to avoid the mayhem and was hit by series leader Mark Berriau. When the dust settled, the rear tire of Cornett-Ching's car was sitting on Berriau's windshield. Safety and fire crews responded quickly. Luckily, there were no injuries.

Ian Graham went on to win the race, and Berriau -- whose pit crew was able to patch up his car -- battled back for a second-place finish. Ryley Seibert of Williams Lake was third.

Despite his disappointing night, Jewell sits third in the season points standings. With one race remaining on the schedule, he has 320 points. He trails the second-place Graham (388 points) and Berriau (404 points).

The season-ending ARCA event is Sept. 8 in Vernon.
