Jays' on-field product inspiring thoughts of championships

There's an empty space in the Toronto Blue Jays front office next to the two World Series trophies they won in 1992 and 1993.

One of their American League championship trophies used to occupy that space, and it's been replaced by a loonie.

Steve Brooks is hoping that's a lucky loonie and so far the Jays are doing their part, having flirted with first place this season in the ultra-tough American League East.

"It would be a dream to win the World Series," said Brooks, the Prince George connection with the Blue Jays.

"They moved that (AL trophy) out when we were doing some renovations here and I did make that joke that we're making space for Number 3. Our pursuit is to win championships, it's not just to be competitive. That's the vision from Paul (Jays president and CEO Beeston) and we all are fully behind that. We have a good core of players and we're on track to being a successful team."

FIX???? The Jays (32-24) are currently 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays. Toronto beat the New York Yankees 6-1 Friday night in Toronto.

A few weeks ago the Jays set team low attendance records. That only adds to the complexity of Brooks's job as vice-president of finance and administration to make the team thrive.

"We know we've got our challenges and that's all part of it," he said. "We're Canada's team and we want the admiration of the nation and that's what we're working towards. We want people to buy into where we're going and follow this ball club and we want to deliver for the country.

"The team is doing very well this year and we're all excited about that. Alex (general manager Anthopoulos) and his team have been doing a great job on the baseball side. We'll work on bringing back the fans by putting on the best baseball product that we have on the field. Winning is certainly going to help."
