Prince George minor hockey product Steven Jandric is in the running for rookie of the year in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
The freshman forward for the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks, who played for the Cariboo Cougars midget team before joining the BCHL with the Vernon Vipers for two seasons, has been named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team.
In 28 conference games, the 20-year-old Jandric collected 14 assists (fourth-most in the WCHA) and finished with 17 points, four goals and a plus-5 rating. In a 35-game season Jandric had four goals and 19 assists for 23 points, second on the team. The Nanooks' season ended with a loss to Minnesota State in the WCHA quarterfinal playoffs.
Jandric's 18-year-old brother Chris, a defenceman for the Vernon Vipers, will join Steven on the Nanooks next season.
The Vipers swept the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in the first round of the B.C. Hockey League playoffs and will play the Wenatchee Wild in Round 2, starting next Friday in Vernon.
