Iwama likes UNBC's Canada West chances

UNBC president Dr. George Iwama is confident the school will gain acceptance into the Canada West Universities Athletic Association for men's and women's basketball.

UNBC president Dr. George Iwama is confident the school will gain acceptance into the Canada West Universities Athletic Association for men's and women's basketball.

"I was born an optimist and I will be the day they bury me," Iwama told The Citizen Thursday night from Vancouver. "I have every reason to be optimistic."

Canada West is part of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), the top-level post-secondary athletics league in the country. Currently, the Northern Timberwolves basketball teams compete in the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association, which is covered by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) umbrella.

Iwama is in a positive frame of mind after a meeting he had last week with Canada West's Clint Hamilton. The men met in Prince George and discussed the current state of affairs within the league, which has received several applications for membership and officially lost Simon Fraser University to Division 2 of the NCAA on Thursday.
