Local setter Colin Carson preparing for duty with Team Canada

Colin Carson is about to take another massive step in his volleyball career.

Carson, a 19-year-old from Prince George, will play for Team Canada at the NORCECA Junior Men's Continental Championship, Aug. 16-21 in Gatineau, Que. At the 11-team event, he'll try to help Canada claim one of three berths to the 2011 world junior championship. Other national teams that will compete at the NORCECA tournament are the United States, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras, Guatemala, Martinique and St. Lucia.

Carson is a six-foot-four setter and a first-time member of Team Canada. Currently, he's training with the club in Ottawa and is "really excited" about playing in the NORCECA (North & Central America and Caribbean Confederation) championship.

"I'm a little nervous, obviously, but just really excited and honoured to have an opportunity to represent my country," Carson told The Citizen via cell phone.

"I think we have a good chance (to qualify for worlds). The Americans and the Cubans are both known to be really strong in these events but top-three is definitely our goal going in."
