Inner City boxers idle at provincials

Inner City Boxing Club fighters Kenny Lally (52kg) and Jag Seehra (60kg) are in Surrey this weekend for the provincial boxing championships but they might not get to fight because they have no opponents in their respective weight classes.

Inner City coach Bob Pegues had hoped Seehra would bump himself up to the 64kg weight class, knowing most of the 60kg opponents from last year's B.C. provincial championships are now competing in the 64kg class.

"I wanted Jag at 64kg because I thought it was an easier division at nationals, even though they are bigger, and he has won a (national) bronze medal at that weight," Pegues said. "The (national) competition is fierce at 60kg with no less than four current or former national champions in the 60kg division."

Seehra made the decision when he weighed less than the 60kg limit at the provincial tournament weigh-ins.

"Jag feels good at the 60kg division and argued hard for it," Pegues said.

"I respect Jag's initiative and agreed with his decision; however at this point it looks like he will have no (provincial) opponents at 64kg."

Pegues was trying to line up opponents for exhibition bouts against Lally and Seehra.

Thomas Speirs of the Spruce Capital Boxing Club was to begin defence of his 64kg senior provincial boxing title Friday in Surrey. Marcus Hume, 20, also of Spruce Capital, was also entered in Friday's provincial card in the 75kg class, along with clubmates Dan Kragt, 21, Hank Lukan, 23, and 14-year-old junior C fighter Mackenzie Cruikshank.
