Ice oval ready for customers

Skaters rejoice -- the Outdoor Ice Oval is opening today. The exact time will depend on how much snow fell overnight.

Skaters rejoice -- the Outdoor Ice Oval is opening today. The exact time will depend on how much snow fell overnight.

If a significant amount of the white stuff has accumulated, ice oval spokesperson Kathy Lewis said the facility likely won't be ready for business until the afternoon hours.

The oval, located in Exhibition Park behind CN Centre, will hold its official opening on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. City officials, as well as representatives from the 2015 Canada Winter Games and Enhance PG, will make opening comments at 12:45 p.m. That will be followed by a speed skating demonstration, conducted by members of the Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club. Blizzard coaches will then lead a learn-to-speed skate session.

Speed skates of various sizes will be available for use. There will be free hot chocolate (bring your own mug) and music.

People will also have the opportunity to sign up for season passes. Prices are $25 for individuals and $60 for families.

The event is being organized by the Outdoor Ice Oval Society, with the goal of encouraging participation in winter recreation and providing an introduction to the sport of long track speed skating.
