After being delayed a week by snowy conditions, the official opening of the Outdoor Ice Oval is scheduled for today.
The oval, located in Exhibition Park behind CN Centre, will hold its opening from noon to 3 p.m. Activities will include a speed skating demonstration, conducted by members of the Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club. Blizzard coaches will then lead a learn-to-speed skate session.
Speed skates of various sizes will be available for use. There will be free hot chocolate (bring your own mug) and music by Doug Waller of Blackwolf Productions.
People will also have the opportunity to sign up for season passes. Prices are $25 for individuals and $60 for families.
The event is being organized by the Outdoor Ice Oval Society, with the goal of encouraging participation in winter recreation and providing an introduction to the sport of long track speed skating.
