A Prince George basketball coach is organizing a 3-on-3 tournament with all proceeds going toward the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon.
It's the first annual Family Dental Care 3v3 Summer Hoops Classic set for June 20-21 at Kelly Road secondary.
"It's an opportunity for high school players who get to showcase their skills," said organizer Nav Parmar. "Our goal is to mirror what the Lower Mainland does (with a lot of 3-on-3 tournaments). The support from the community has been great."
The 10-team senior boys division for Grade 11 and 12 players is already full, but there is still room for five more teams in the junior boys division for Grade 8 to 10 players.
Besides Prince George, teams from Vanderhoof and Smithers have registered.
The cost per team is $60. Four players can be part of a team to allow players to take a rest. All proceeds go directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
There will also be a three-point contest, as well as a DJ and food on site.
Parmar, who helps coach the Junior Timberwolves Academy with UNBC men's basketball head coach Todd Jordan, said the sport in Prince George is on the rise.
"More and more kids are getting involved and we're providing an opportunity for kids to develop and showcase their skills," said Parmar of the off-season club program that takes place outside of school in May and June.
Parmar hopes to make the Summer Hoops Classic an annual event and to include co-ed teams in the future.
