For 35 years, ringette has been part of the Prince George sports scene.

What began in 1980 when 22 girls signed up to play the game as an alternative to hockey, now involves hundreds of players in Northern B.C., and they're not all girls. This weekend's Joy Hoffman Memorial tournament at Kin 2 and 3 is the 24th annual.

Hoffman was instrumental in bringing the sport to Prince George and her voluntary organizing efforts continued until her death in 1992.

This year's tournament, which started Friday afternoon, has attracted 25 teams from Prince George, Quesnel, Houston and Terrace and they'll be busy on the ice this weekend with 41 games scheduled.

Teams in under-7, under-9, under-10, under-2, under-14, under-16 and under-19 age classes will compete for trophies in the three-day tournament, which wraps up Sunday afternoon.

Games resume today and Sunday at 7 a.m.
