Hockey school offers core skills

Not every hockey player is destined to play on a rep team.

Some are quite content to score goals and block shots in the house league ranks.

But no matter what level they do achieve, chances are good that they will enjoy playing the game more as a lifelong activity if they learn the skills at a young age.

Summer hockey school is the perfect time for that.

The Prince George Minor Hockey Association has been selected as one of two cities in the province to host a BC Hockey summer skills camp, July 25-29 at the Elksentre.

PGMHA rep team coaches Lorne Hauk and Rob Connelly are the head instructors, with help from Eric Henderson, the association's house league head coach.

Cost of the camp is $400 for five days. That includes two on-ice session per day, with dryland training and other activities including team building also included.

The camp is open to players aged eight to 12 years. It can accommodate between 40 and 50 players, who will be divided into two groups.

"We're going to be up at the Elksentre so we'll be using the field across the street and we'll probably play soccer and do skill development like puck-handling outside, away from the ice," said Henderson.

"It's a full day, they'll be kept busy from 9 (a.m.) to 3 (p.m.). it gives the kids who are house league players some extra ice time. We'll take a look at their age and skill level and if we kind somebody in a lower group who looks like they belong with the upper group we'll move them up."
