What started out as four fathers trying to encourage the hockey development of their sons has turned into much more.
Marco Myatovic, Gerry Brideau, Jeff Maduke and Jason Leslie have come together to form Sharper Edge Hockey, which puts on hockey skills training camps in Prince George and around the northern region. The group hosted their first Sharper Edge Hockey Classic Cup tournament on the weekend, which saw 88 participants born between 2002-07 take part.
Between the four hockey dads they have seven boys who play. Brideau, Maduke and Leslie serve as coaches with Sharper Edge while Myatovic acts as manager.
There were two divisions at the tournament with kids with birthdays between 2005-07 divided into four teams in Division 2 while the older kids (2002-04) made up the four teams in Division 1.
The double-A and triple-A players came from 16 communities around northern British Columbia and Alberta as well as four players who travelled from Yellowknife, N.W.T.
Myatovic said they're already looking at making it an annual event in July.
The Blackhawks won the championship in Division 2 by a 10-4 margin over the Penguins, but in Division 1 the Penguins won the 5-4 title game.
Sharper Edge will travel across northern B.C. putting on camps in Taylor, Chetwynd and Vanderhoof between August and October.
