High school semifinal games set

There's only one reason city high school senior basketball is taking a week off -- because academic pursuits are more important than athletic endeavours.

There's only one reason city high school senior basketball is taking a week off -- because academic pursuits are more important than athletic endeavours.

The Big Kahuna League is resting for exam week, but the hiatus arrives with the playoff battles set in stone. On Monday, Kelly Road's senior boys, who were 3-2 in city play, will go to Duchess Park to face the first-place Condors (5-0), while College Heights (3-2, in a three-way tie for second spot) will play host to D.P. Todd on Wednesday. Both games are 6:30 p.m. starts.

The winners of those matchups will meet for the city title, Monday, Feb. 8, 8:15 p.m. at the Northern Sport Centre

The senior girls start semifinals next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. with Cedars Christian going to D.P. Todd secondary. The Trojans were 5-0 in league play, while Cedars was 1-4, finishing in fourth spot. The other semifinal will have College Heights (3-2, third) going to PGSS (4-1, second) on Thursday evening, a 7:30 p.m. start, and the winners of those two games will meet in the final, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 8, at the Northern Sport Centre (6:15 p.m. tip-off).

--- College Heights will play host to a senior boys tournament this weekend, the Cougar Classic. Games start Friday, and the final is slated for Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m. Other teams taking part are Correlieu, Houston Christian, Columneetza, North Peace, South Peace, Duchess Park and Smithers.
