Lavanna Laass and Grace Northrop from the Hart Judo Academy competed at the invitation-only Elite 8 national championships on the weekend in Montreal.

Laass competed in the minus-63 kilogram over-18 women's division and Northrop sparred in the minus-52kg under-18 women's division.

Hart Judo Academy head coach Bruce Kamstra said Laass was one of eight athletes in her division, while Northrop was one of five. They both fought well, he said, but didn't come away with any wins.

They're training with the national team and coaching staff at the National Training Centre at Olympic Stadium this week.

Laass and Northrop were invited to participate in an Introduction to the National Training Center by Judo Canada so they could experience what it would be like to live in Montreal and train with the national team and coaches.

Both Laass and Northrop qualified to compete for Team B.C. at the 2015 Canada Winter Games next month in Prince George.
