The Prince George Cougars' top sniper was recognized by the Western Hockey League for his offensive outburst in two games last weekend.

Jansen Harkins, a 17-year-old centre, was named the Denny's WHL Player of the Week after he scored a goal and six assists in two games in Washington State.

Friday night in Seattle, Harkins scored the overtime winner in a 5-4 victory against the Thunderbirds and added three assists. Harkins followed that up with three assists in Saturday's 5-1 Cougars victory in Everett.

In 61 games this season, Harkins leads the team in scoring with 19 goals and 57 assists for 76 points.

His 24 power-play points and 20 multi-point games are also tops on the team.

Harkins has been an offensive threat in his last eight games, scoring two goals and adding 14 assists. Linemates Chase Witala (six goals and seven assists) and Zach Pochiro (seven goals, eight assists) have combined for 44 points over the last eight games.

The 26-33-2-2 Cougars are riding a three-game winning streak and have won five of their last six games, going 6-2-1-1 in February. They currently hold the final playoff spot in the B.C. Division.

The Cougars are getting ready for a three-game homestand that begins Wednesday night when the Calgary Hitmen visit CN Centre. The Hitmen are second in the Eastern Conference with a 39-19-1-4 record and 83 points.

The Victoria Royals visit CN Centre Friday and Saturday.

Going into this week, Harkins needs just two assists to surpass Quinn Hancock (58 assists) as the single-season assists leader in Prince George Cougars history. On Feb. 16 in Edmonton, Harkins, a draft-eligible forward, recorded his 100th career WHL point, making him the second-fastest Cougar 17-year-old to reach that milestone. (The fastest was Blair Betts).

Harkins was recently ranked as the 18th-best North American skater on NHL Central Scouting's mid-term rankings list.
