Hampole places 14th in nation

With the eyes of the country watching his every move on the ice, Justin Hampole did his city proud.

The 15-year-old Hampole, a member of the Northern B.C. Centre for Skating, finished 14th out of 18 novice competitors at the 2017 Canadian Tire National Figure Skating Championships in Ottawa.

Hampole, the 2015 Canada Winter Games bronze medalist, scored 61.12 points in his free skate and 38.10 in his short program for a 99.22 point total.

The novice competition ended Tuesday.

Hampole was the first Prince George skater in 17 years to qualify for the national event.

Corey Circelli of Toronto won the event with 139.27 points, followed by silver medalist Dawson Nodwell of Springbank, Atla. (132.67), and Alistair Lam of Hamilton. Ont. (127.75), who won bronze.

Beres Clements of Richmond was fifth (124.50).
