Gymnasts excel at Okanagan event

Lina Goto and Alia Wilson showed they were up for the challenge at the Ogopogo Invitational Gymnastics meet in Kelowna.

Both of the Prince George Gymnastics Club athletes moved up a level after the provincial championship and were competing for the first time in their new categories.

Goto moved from the provincial 5 (P5) open division, where she was the all-around champion, to the national open category. At the Ogopogo meet, Goto received silver medals on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise and won the bronze on beam and in the all around.

Wilson won gold in the all-around at provincials and made a seamless transition into the P4 tyro division. Wilson took gold on bars and bronze on beam and finished fourth in the all around, fifth on vault and seventh on floor.

The meet in Kelowna also marked the final competition for Mary-Kate Barwise and Erica Hirtz as both athletes have decided to leave gymnastics to pursue other activities. Barwise recorded a fifth place finish on vault in the P3 novice division, while Hirtz was sixth on bars, seventh on beam, eighth in the all around and ninth on floor in her final P3 open competition.

There were 18 other gymnasts from the Prince George club competing in Kelowna.

In P1 tyro, Emily MacDonald won silver on bars and was fifth on vault, eighth in the all around and ninth on beam and floor, while Dallyn Long took bronze on vault and floor, was sixth on beam and in the all around and 10th on bars.

The P1 open division had three Prince George gymnasts - Bella Stokes won gold on vault, bars, beam and the all around and won bronze on floor; Monica Bronowski finished fourth in all four events and was fifth in the all around; and Kalena McCarville took silver on floor, bronze on bars, beam and the all around and was fifth on vault.

Aly Muir was third on vault in the P2 novice division and Lindsay VanMook was third on beam, fourth on vault, fifth on bars, sixth in the all around and seventh on floor in the P2 open division.

In P3 tyro, Bronwyn Ellington finished fifth on vault and floor and was ninth on bars, beam and the all around.

Anna MacDonald won gold on vault in the P3 novice division and took bronze on beam, was seventh in the all around and 10th on floor. Reid Powers was fifth on beam, eight on floor and 10th on vault and in the all around, while Naraa Little was eight on bars, ninth on floor and 10th on beam. Rhiana Palfy was eighth on floor and 10th on bars and Mekenna Parker was eighth on vault.

In the P3 open division, Miranda Doerksen placed first on vault, third on floor, fifth on bars and the all around and ninth on beam; Jamie Hinks was fourth on floor, sixth in the all around, seventh on bars, eighth on vault and ninth on beam; Kimberly Marsh was fifth on vault, eighth on beam and 10th on bars, floor and the all around; and Tianna Millns placed eighth on floor and ninth on vault.

Milan Knight won silver on bars and bronze on floor in the P5 open division, while placing fourth in the all around, fifth on vault and eighth on beam.

The final gymnastics meet of the season for the Prince George club will be in Smithers.
