The Prince George Grays secured a playoff spot in the 2012 Bid Group Senior Men's Baseball Championship when they knocked off the defending champion Victoria Mavericks 7-5 in an extra inning Sunday.
Jay Cook continued to swing the hot bat for the Grays when his sacrifice bunt in the top of the eighth inning brought two men home at Citizen Field. The Mavericks overthrew first base which allowed Kalen Kirkpatrick and Cook to both score.
Victoria forced the extra inning with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5. The seventh inning was scoreless.
With the win the Grays (2-1) join the Kamloops Sun Devils (2-1) in the playoff round beginning tonight with games at 6 and 8:30 p.m. The Mavericks (1-2) miss the playoffs.
The Sun Devils lost their final round-robin game 7-1 to the Burnaby Bulldogs. The Bulldogs scored all their runs in the first two innings.
The Langley Blaze had clinched first place Saturday with a 7-0 win over the Trail Orioles.
The final playoff spot will go to either the Orioles or the Nanaimo Coalminers depending on the outcomes of Sunday's final Division 2 games. Nanaimo has a 8-0 lead over the Blaze in the top of the seventh inning as the Blaze are down to their final three outs. The Orioles play the winless Kelowna Jays (0-2) at 3:30 p.m.
Both the Coalminers and Orioles went into their final game with identical 1-1 records. In their head-to-head game, Trail topped Nanaimo 4-2.
Playoffs begin tonight at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Teams TBA.
The championship final is scheduled for Monday at 12:45 p.m.
