Grays off to Alberta for ball tournament

In preparation for the provincial championship they're hosting August long weekend the all-star Prince George Grays are off to Red Deer for a three-day tournament.

The Grays, whose members are spread out among the Prince George Senior Baseball League teams, will take part in the Red Deer Riggers annual tournament, July 20-22. Prince George plays their first two games today against the Red Deer Stag (noon) and the Fort Saskatchewan Athletics (3 p.m.)

The Athletics are the defending Alberta senior men's champions and will be in Prince George from Aug. 24-26 for the Canadian championship.

Other teams taking part in the tournament include the host Riggers, the St. Albert Tigers and the Parkland Athletics (Spruce Grove/Stony Plain).

The tournament final is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m.

The Grays will host the seven-team 2012 BC Senior Men's Baseball Championship, Aug. 3-6, at Citizen Field. Teams will be divided into two pools and play a three-game round-robin where the top two squads in each pool advance to the playoff round. In addition to the Grays, the defending champion Victoria Mavericks, the Trail Orioles and the Nanaimo Coalminers will also take part in the BC championship.

Next weekend, the Prince George IDL Midget Knights host the Wood Wheaton/PG Motors Midget Boys championship at Citizen Field.
