Golfers net themselves a win

When one had an off hole, the other was on. Following that pattern, Janice Lazzarin and Sheila Arnett became first-time champions at the BMO Ladies 2-Ball Best Ball golf tournament.

The event, Sunday at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club, followed a low-net format. At the conclusion of 18 holes, Lazzarin and Arnett had themselves a net 63 on the par 73 layout.

"We played it perfectly," Lazzarin said. "If I struggled, Sheila was there, and if she was having a bad hole, I was there. There was maybe one hole, No. 16, where we both messed up but that was the only one."

On every hole, each player played her own ball and the lower individual net score was used for the team score.

Lazzarin entered the tournament with a 15 handicap and Arnett came in with a 29 but had to play to a 25 because teammates could only be separated by a maximum of 10 strokes. Both players ended up shooting their lowest gross rounds of the season at the PGGCC, Lazzarin with an 85 and Arnett with a 101.

"It feels awesome," Arnett said. "We worked well as partners. It clicked well -- sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't."

This was the third time Lazzarin and Arnett had paired up for the tournament.

The team of Laurel Clark and Jeanne Clough also shot a net 63 but finished second after the tiebreaking formula was applied. Mabel Blocka and Sheila McDougall, who carded a 64, placed third.

The Junior Simon Fraser Open is the next event at the PGGCC. It will be on the course Saturday and Sunday.
