Michael Garteig is a big man on campus in Hamden, Conn.

He's been lights-out as the go-to goalie for the Quinnipiac University Bobcats since the college hockey season started.

And he's from Prince George.

The 22-year-old Garteig won his third East Coast Athletic Conference goalie-of-the-week award for his puckstopping efforts in a pair of wins over ECAC rivals. He made 31 saves while beating Harvard 3-2 and had 19 stops in a 3-1 decision over Dartmouth.

The Bobcats (11-1-1) are ranked 5th in the NCAA. They'll be in Princeton, N.J. tonight to play the 2-7-0 Tigers.

Garteig played his minor hockey in Prince George before moving on to junior B hockey in Princeton of the KIJHL. He played two seasons for the Powell River Kings, where he set new BCHL records in 2010 for goals-against average (1.69) and save percentage (.934) and tied the league record for most shutouts in a season with seven. He was traded to Penticton, where he helped the Vees win the 2012 Royal Bank Cup national championship. He's a two-time winner of the BCHL's top goaltender award.
