Gairns nearly cracks top-10 in provincial Super G

Gairns is one of five members from the Prince George Alpine Ski Club who is competing at the event which wraps up Saturday.

Vernon’s Katrina Van Soest won Monday’s race, posting a time of 51.56, followed by Soleil Patterson of Red Mountain Ski Club in second at 51.74. Whistler’s Laura Swaffield was third at 52.29.

Maya Medhurst from Prince George clocked 1:04.20 to finish 52nd out of the 58 racers who hit course.

On the U16 male side, Shawn Nydegger was the top Prince George skier. He finished 13th with a time of 52.54. His teammates Noah Jacob and Gavin Rowell were 32nd and 35th respectively out of the 49 racers who went down the course.

At The Citizen’s press deadline, results weren’t available from Tuesday’s second Super G.

The top 14- and 15-year-old men and women, about 120 in all from 15 ski clubs, are at Purden this week, trying to qualify for nationals and make an impression for selection to the 2015 Canada Winter Games alpine events at Purden a year from now.

Two days of giant slalom, a two-run combined time race, get underway today.

The women start racing at 9 a.m., followed by the men at 10:15 a.m. The second runs on both days are at 1 p.m. for the women and 2:15 p.m. for the men.

The giant slalom course has 310 metres of vertical drop and will take skiers roughly one minute and 10 seconds to complete.

The slalom event is a two-run combined time race that begins Friday and wraps up Saturday. The slalom course is 160m and will take 60 seconds to complete.

The three tracks and courses at Purden are earning praise from out-of-town coaches, who say it’s the best track built in B.C. for U14 to U16 racers.
