Aiden Winkel never wants to come last again.
The youngest of the Winkel triplets, Aiden edged out his sister Alexandra by 14 seconds as they both won gold in the boys and girls 11-12 divisions, respectively, Sunday at the 18th annual Kids Fun Triathlon at Fort George Park. Eldest sister Emma won silver.
"I saw my sister behind me and I was like 'Go, go, go,'" said Aiden. "I didn't want to lose to them."
When the triplets were born 12 years ago it was Emma entering the world one minute before Alexandra and two minutes before Aiden. In their first triathlon, Aiden finished in 36 minutes, 31 seconds (0:36.31), while Alexandra came in at 0:36.45 with Emma right behind at 0:39.26.
If not for a wrong turn by Alexandra after the eight-kilometre bike ride as she was starting the two-kilometre run, the outcome may have been different.
"I turned off the wrong way in the area where we put our bikes, that cost me some seconds," said Alexandra. "I might've won."
But then again, maybe not, as Alexandra admitted she's pretty laid back compared to her more competitive siblings.
The 200-metre swim at Four Seasons Pool to start the day was no problem for the Winkels since the trio began swimming with the Prince George Barracudas Swim Club when they were seven.
Emma said it was nice to finish her first triathlon with such strong support at the park.
"The volunteers were nice they all clapped and cheered," she said.
