Fuller brothers find luck fleeting

Sunday wasn't a lucky day for Fort Fraser's Fuller brothers. "It was short-lived today, but we put a good show on for everyone," said Darcy Fuller, 26, about his unlucky day at PGARA Speedway Park during the second day of hit-to-pass competition.

Sunday wasn't a lucky day for Fort Fraser's Fuller brothers.

"It was short-lived today, but we put a good show on for everyone," said Darcy Fuller, 26, about his unlucky day at PGARA Speedway Park during the second day of hit-to-pass competition.

"The car got short in a hurry and we ended up taking out the motor and the back end of it, well, there's not much left of it," he laughed.

A bit of an understatement, considering Darcy - who drove in from Fort McMurray, Alta., where he's lived for the past three years, for the weekend event - drove most of Sunday dragging his rear bumper.

"There's so many noises going on, you don't even notice the bumper dragging," said Darcy.

But, Darcy won't return to Alberta empty-handed, having claimed the main eight-cylinder event Saturday, putting $500 in his pocket. He also won a heat for another $25.

"A lot of it's luck and the rest of it, I guess, you can break it down to skill," said Darcy. "You just do what you do out there - do the best you can and hope for the best."

Darcy had a little more than luck out on the track last weekend, as his younger brother Cody was out smashing and bashing with him for the first time, while the brothers had a very vocal cheering squad in the stands.

"He did awesome," said Darcy. "He won his first hear Saturday; I'm not exactly sure where he placed, but he got a lot of laps out there.

"It's good to have him out there and get him into the sport," said Darcy.

The brothers grew up around the sport as their dad was a driver.

Saturday, Cody pocketed $75, but the 24-year-old stalled his car on the track at the end of the second day and could only watch as Fort St. John's Jarrett Bonn made the last hit for the victory.

But, Cody was lucky to even compete Sunday after blowing his transmission the previous night. Another driver, Stephen Woods, helped the first-timer out by arranging to get a new transmission for Cody so he could race.
