Less than a week after he was traded from the Prince George Spruce Kings, Dylan Wegner seized his chance to show his former team his game-situation capabilities.
The 19-year-old forward, a native of Nashville, Tenn., picked up the first points of his B.C. Hockey League career with a goal and an assist Tuesday in Merritt, where the host Centennials spanked the Spruce Kings 6-3.
It was the first game in 10 days for the Kings and their rustiness showed. Nathan Taylor took a feed from Wegner and scored on the first shot Prince George goalie Ryan Sanborn faced, just 43 seconds in. The Cents scored two more before the period ended and welcomed replacement goalie Marcus Ouellet into the game in the second period with an early goal from Cullen Emery to make it a 4-0 count.
Wegner’s goal came shorthanded late in the second period.
Killian McGregor-Bennett, Luca Primerano and Owen Goodbrand scored for Prince George. Kiernan Pouliet, Ryan Spinacle, and Easton Ryan, into an empty net, accounted for the rest of the Merritt scoring.
Karlis Wezsargs, the first star of the game, made 39 saves in goal for the Cents, who were outshot 41-39
The Kings face the defending BCHL-champion Penticton Vees tonight, then travel north to West Kelowna to play the Warriors on Friday.
