Former Spruce King Donaldson picked as finalist for BCHL's MVP award

Nanaimo Clippers forward Sean Donaldson, a former Prince George Spruce King, has been named one of three finalists for the Vern Dye Memorial Award which goes to the MVP of the B.C. Hockey League.

Former Prince George Spruce King forward Sean Donaldson is one of three finalists for the B.C. Hockey League’s most valuable player award.

The 20-year-old Vancouver native now skates for the Nanaimo Clippers, who acquired him in an August 2019 trade from Prince George for future considerations, after he helped the Kings win their first Fred Page Cup league championship in the spring of 2019.

Donaldson scored 36 goals and collected 70 points in 47 games this season. He played the 2020-21 season in the USHL for the Sioux Falls Stampede. Donaldson has signed with Cornell University for next season.

Also named as finalists for the Vern Dye Memorial Trophy which goes to the league MVP are forward Simon Tassy of the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and forward Matthew Wood of the Victoria Grizzlies.

Wood, who just turned 17 on Feb. 6 and is still classed as a rookie, won the BCHL scoring race with 85 points in 46 game. The Nanaimo native scored 45 goals to lead the Grizzlies Wood has signed with the University of Connecticut to begin a scholarship arrangement in the 2023-24 season.

Tassy, a 21-year-old native of Montreal, had a breakout season in his third year with the Silverbacks, scoring 38 goals and 40 assists for 78 points, third-best in the BCHL. He s also NCAA-bound, heading to Minnesota State Mankato next season.

League award finalists were determined after a vote from the 18 BCHL head coaches. A second vote of the coaches will determine the winners, which will be announced April 26. The other finalists are:
