Former Prince George Cougars captain Garrett Thiessen is among four former Cougars playing for gold Sunday at the CIS Potashcorp University Cup hockey championship in Saskatoon.
Thiessen, a 24-year-old defenceman and native of Prince George, is expected to be in the lineup for the Saskatchewan Huskies along with former Cougar defenceman Cody Hobbs when they play the Alberta Golden Bears in the final. Forward Charles Inglis is also on the Saskatchewan roster but has yet to play in the University Cup playoffs.
James Dobrowolski, 24, a former left winger for the Cougars, will line up on the other side of the ice, playing for the Golden Bears. He's now in his third season with Alberta.
Thiessen, a former Cougar captain, graduated from the Cats in 2010 after a five-season career in the WHL with Prince George, Prince Albert and Kamloops. He's now in his fourth season playing in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association for Saskatchewan. Hobbs, 24, left the Cougars in 2009 and is now a fifth-year Husky. Inglis, who played two seasons for the Cougars before he was traded to Red Deer, finished his WHL career in Kamloops. This is the 21 year old's rookie season in the CIS.
Dobrowolski played two seasons with the Prince Albert Raiders before he was traded to the Cougars for a two-season stint that started in 2009.
The Huskies hammered Windsor 9-0 in a semifinal playoff Saturday, while Alberta needed double-overtime to defeat McGill 3-2 in the other semifinal. Former Tri-City American Jonny Lazo scored at 16:22 of the second overtime to win it.
The final will be webcast live on www.CIS-SIC.tv today at 12:30 p.m.
