Football standouts showcased in all-star game

Some of the best high school football players in northern B.C. have teamed up to become the North Stars.

Some of the best high school football players in northern B.C. have teamed up to become the North Stars.

The North Stars, made up of about 30 athletes in Grades 10 and 11 from Prince George, will compete in the Two Rivers Bowl All-Star Game on May 30 against other top young players from the Interior.

"Twenty have signed up already and we're expecting 10 or more to do so this weekend," said North Stars head coach Don Williams, who also serves as the head football coach at Prince George secondary. "The numbers are good and include the four local schools and it's also open to Vanderhoof and Quesnel."

The purpose of the game at Masich Place Stadium is to showcase the top athletes from northern B.C. against those from the Interior - Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Vernon and Kelowna.

In 2014, the North Stars traveled to Kamloops to play the Interior and while the Prince George contingent lost the game, the players still enjoyed the experience.

The North Stars will practice four times - May 24, May 25, May 27 and May 29 - prior to the Two Rivers Bowl game at 11 a.m.

Besides head coach, Williams will take on the offensive co-ordinator duties and oversee the running backs.

Duchess Park coach Richard Bundock is the North Stars defensive co-ordinator, linebackers and defensive backs coach.

The Prince George Minor Football Association is providing the jerseys for the team to use.

After three weeks of practices, spring camp at PGSS, Kelly Road, Duchess Park and College Heights has wrapped up.

Beginning Tuesday at 4 p.m. at PGSS's lower field, the schools will play a series of mini exhibition games against each other. College Heights, Duchess Park and PGSS junior varsity squads will tackle one another on Tuesday, while the senior Polars, Condors and Roadrunners will battle each other Thursday at 4 p.m.

It's the first time in a few years the Polars have put together a junior team.

"There's a lot of new blood," said Williams. "Last year we didn't have a JV team. There are a lot of new players coming in."
