Willy Florell and Michelle Hruby rolled to singles championship titles at the Northwest Open five-pin bowling tournament, held Friday through Sunday at Nechako Lanes.
Florell, who was representing Nechako, earned a bye to the stepladder playoff final. In it, he beat Iain McRitchie of Prince George's Black Diamond Lanes 233-214.
McRitchie won three previous stepladder matches to get a shot at Florell in the final. His victories came against Andrew Adams of Black Diamond (301-204), Chris Arnett of Black Diamond (278-194) and Cec MacAdams of Nechako (245-205).
In the ladies division, Hruby - from Terrace - also had a bye into the stepladder final. In the match, she defeated Lorraine Sharyk of Terrace 268-196.
In the other stepladder playoff games, Candice Minard of Black Diamond beat Julia Armitage of Smithers 175-148. Minard then downed Katrina Perreault of Smithers 265-177 but fell 170-165 to Sharyk in the semifinal match.
In team competition, Nechako Lanes topped the men's division and Smithers finished first on the ladies side. Nechako also claimed the mixed team championship.
At the conclusion of the tournament, five men and five women were recognized as all-stars. All-stars for the men were Florell, MacAdams, McRitchie, Dan Mueller of Terrace and Nechako's Bob Piner. Women's all-stars were Nechako bowlers Amber Raycraft, Sherri Florell and Janelle Sentes, as well as Sharyk and Krista Pettigrew of Smithers.
