Goalie Avery Quiring, defencemen Kiana Wilkinson, and forwards Sabrina Knoop and Madison Fjellstrom, all of Prince George, are going camping this weekend.
They are among 42 players selected to compete in this weekend's B.C. Hockey high performance female under-18 camp at Lake Cowichan.
Quiring and Fjellstrom played together this past season on the Northland Dodge Northern Female Cougars of the B.C. triple-A midget Female Hockey League. They will join Cougar defenceman Cassidy Bell of Baldonnel on Team Orange for the four-day evaluation camp, which starts with practices today.
Wilkinson and Knoop just completed a season with the Richmond Pacific Steelers of the Junior Women's Hockey League. They will suit up for Team Blue at the camp along with four Cougar players -- goalie Kelsey Roberts of Kitimat, and forwards Ava Keis of Quesnel, Cassidy Mallot of Lone Butte and Hunter Mosher of Chetwynd.
In addition to on-ice practices, the players will go through technical instruction sessions, fitness testing, mental skills strategies, video instruction, strength and conditioning and team building events. Game are scheduled Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Following cuts on Sunday to reduce the two teams into one, the Team B.C. players will be fitted for new equipment and will undergo a 90-minute practice session.
The players will gather again during the summer and in September for provincial team camp, leading up to the under-18 national championship tournament in November. The team will represent B.C. at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George in February 2015. To be eligible, all female players must be under the age of 18 as of Dec. 31, 2014.
Prince George Cougars first-round draft pick Justin Almeida of Kitimat made the 42-player list for the B.C. Hockey high performance male under-16 summer evaluation camp in Nanaimo, July 8-13.
Almeida, a five-foot-seven, 130-pound forward picked fifth overall by the Cougars in the 2014 WHL bantam draft, played last season for the North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks. He's been picked to play for the Bruins at the camp. One other player from northern B.C., defenceman Joel Patsey of Hazelton, made the 42-player list and will play in the camp for the Penguins.
Forward Myles Mattila of Quesnel, captain of the Prince George Farr Fabricating bantam Tier 1 Cougars, did not make the cut for the provincial camp.
The final team selected from that camp will represent the province in the under-16 male hockey tournament at the Canada Winter Games.
