It'll be spring break in Vernon for the members of the Prince George Western Industrial Contractors bantam female Cougars.
The Cougars swept their best-of-three zone hockey playoff last weekend taking care of business in straight games with 2-1 and 3-1 wins over the Williams Lake Timberwolves to earn a spot in the provincial championship, March 17-21 in Vernon.
In the opening game, the Cougars struck early as Talia Nahulak gave them a 1-0 lead. Prince George went up 2-0 in the middle frame when Katie Young scored on a penalty shot after a T-wolves' player was called for closing her hand on the puck in the crease. The T-wolves pulled within a goal in the third period but the Cougars controlled the play afterwards.
Sunday it was the T-wolves who struck first opening up a 1-0 advantage but the Cougars were able to tie the game at 1-1 in the second period after Young won an offensive zone faceoff and slid the puck back to Nadine Kwiatkowski who wasted no time in firing the shot in off the far post.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the midway point of the third period when Jordan Shanks gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead. Young sealed the win when she picked up a loose puck at centre ice and put it into the empty net to go up 3-1 late in the game.
Olivia Johnson earned both wins in the Cougars' net.
