The Northland Dodge Cougars had their game in overdrive.

The Cougars, who compete in the B.C. Hockey Female Midget AAA League, picked up six of a possible eight points during a weekend road trip to the Lower Mainland. Playing at Burnaby 8 Rinks, the Cats beat the Vancouver Island Hurricanes 2-0, used a comeback to down the Kootenay Wildcats 4-3, dumped the Thompson Okanagan Rockets 4-0 and lost 3-1 to the powerful Fraser Valley Phantom.

Against the Hurricanes, Taylor Beck and Madison Fjellstrom were the Cougars goal-scorers and Kelsey Roberts earned the shutout.

In the game against the Wildcats, the Cougars trailed 3-0 in the third period but stormed back in the final 13 minutes on two goals each by Tessa Hare and Fjellstrom.

In the win against the Rockets, Roberts was again unbeatable in net and got offensive support from Hare, Hunter Mosher, Lauren Smaha-Muir and Ava Keis.

The 15- to 17-year-old Cougars continued their fine play against the Phantom, a club that recently won a major tournament in Wilcox, Sask., site of the prestigious Athol Murray College of Notre Dame. Also, during the Christmas break in Calgary, the Phantom made it to the final of the Mac's tournament and lost 2-1 in overtime to the Westman Wildcats.

In the Sunday game, the Cougars fell behind 2-0 in the first period but pulled to within a goal when Keis connected on a third-period power play. Later, the Phantom added an insurance marker. Cats goalie Avery Quiring was strong in a losing cause.

The Cougars elevated their record to 10-5-5 and, in the process, jumped into second place in the six-team league. They trail only the Phantom (15-1-6).

This weekend, the Cats will play a trio of home games against the West Coast Avalanche. Games are scheduled for Friday (6 p.m., Kin 2) Saturday (6:15 p.m., Elksentre) and Sunday (10:15 a.m., CN Centre).
