Ava Keis and Hunter Mosher each scored in the second period to lead the Northland Dodge Northern Female Cougars to a 2-1 win over the Peace Country Storm at the Mac's triple-A midget tournament Monday in Calgary.
The Grande Prairie-based Storm skated to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but the Cougars rebounded in the second with goals from Keis and Mosher. Sage Desjardins and Casey Norris each added assists.
Emilie Nichols swept aside 19 of 20 shots in net for the Cats to earn the win.
It was the Cougars first victory of the 15-team tournament as they now sport a 1-2 record going into their last round-robin game today against the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats.
Sunday, the Cougars were edged 4-3 by the defending champion Westman Wildcats from Manitoba.
After the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first period, Desjardins put the Cougars on board with her first goal of the game. She added another in the second on the power play, while Marissa Nichol also tallied with the man-advantage to take a 3-2 lead.
The Wildcats tied the game with 40 seconds left in the period and scored the winner at the 4:25-minute mark of the third.
Westman outshot the Cougars 24-14. Kelsey Roberts made 20 saves.
On Boxing Day, the St. Albert Slash shut out the Cougars 1-0 in a goaltending duel.
The Slash scored its lone goal in the second period and despite Roberts being pulled in the final minute of the third period for the extra attacker, the Cougars couldn't tie the game.
