For the fifth consecutive year the Cedars Christian Eagles are the single A girls basketball north-central zone champions.
The Eagles were a perfect 3-0 at the zone championship held in Fort St. James last weekend, beating the host Falcons 86-32 in the final to earn another banner. Cedars two senior players, Kayla Gordon and Kayla Eby led the Eagles with strong performances in the final.
The single A provincial championship will be hosted by Cedars Christian, March 6-9 at UNBC. Since the Eagles already had the host berth, the Falcons and Fraser Lake Cougars also earned provincial berths as the second- and- third-place teams in the north-central zone, respectively.
In their opening game the Eagles beat Sir Alexander Mackenzie (Bella Coola) 80-19 before earning their place in the final with a 101-37 victory over the Cougars.
Gordon was named tournament MVP while several of her Eagles' teammates also received honours, including first-team all-star Eby, second-team all-star Shannon Kragt and top offensive player Hannah Pudlas.
Polars golden too
The PGSS Polars senior girls also earned the north-central berth at the AAA zone basketball tournament in Dawson Creek last weekend.
In Saturday's final, the Polars were led by Olivia Letendre's 15 points and Kelsey Videgain with 12 points, as they defeated North Peace 77-37. The Polars earned their place in the final by placing first after the round-robin games, beating Dawson Creek 73-26 and North Peace 77-42. In double-knockout style North Peace beat Dawson Creek for another chance to try to takedown the Polars.
Issy Bourque of the Polars was named tournament MVP while Mavia Nijjer was named as an all-star and Videgain was selected as top defensive player.
The Polars will represent the north-central zone at the AAA senior girls provincial tournament, March 6-9 at the Langley Events Centre.
On the senior boys' side in Dawson Creek, the PGSS Polars finished third in the north-central zone as North Peace earned the berth at the provincial tournament.
The Polars opened with a 78-69 loss to the Correlieu Clan (Quesnal) before beating Dawson Creek 60-55. In their final game the Polars lost 79-63 to North Peace. Riley MacDonald had 20 points and Nick Novak had 19 in the Polars loss to North Peace. Novak was named to the all-star team.
North Peace beat the Clan twice in the double-knockout format to win the zone.
