The Cedars Christian School Eagles and Duchess Park Condors are favoured to shoot their way to zone titles at senior girls and senior boys basketball tournaments that start today.
The Cedars girls are the top seed at the north central single-A event, which gets underway at 8 a.m. at the Northern Sport Centre. In the 11-team tournament, the Eagles will play their first game at 3:45 p.m. at Duchess Park against either eighth-ranked Fort Nelson or ninth-seeded Acwsalcta. Those teams square off at 11:20 a.m. at the NSC and the winner will advance to face Cedars.
Valemount is the No. 2 seed, followed by Northside Christian School of Vanderhoof.
Play will resume at 8 a.m. on Friday and will continue on Saturday. The championship game is set for 4:20 p.m. at the NSC. Both finalists will qualify for provincials, March 8-11 in Duncan.
In the most recent set of B.C. rankings, the Eagles were sixth, Valemount was 10th and Northside received an honourable mention.
The Condors, meanwhile, hold the top ranking for the triple-A boys zones, which they are hosting. Today's first game, at 2 p.m., will see the PGSS Polars take to the court against Lake City of Williams Lake. Later, at 6 p.m., the College Heights Cougars will tip off against Dawson Creek. As for the Condors, they'll play either PGSS or Lake City at 7:45 p.m. in their first game.
In a double knockout format, games will continue Friday, Saturday, and, if necessary, Sunday. The first final is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday. If both teams come out of that game with one loss in the tournament, they will meet again at 10 a.m. Sunday to decide the zone champion and provincial representative.
Duchess Park got an honourable mention in the Feb. 15 B.C. rankings. The provincial tournament is March 8-11 in Langley.
At the junior level, Duchess Park and PGSS will compete at the girls and boys provincial tournaments, both being held in Langley.
