Success on the ice means job security for the head coach of the Prince George Spruce Kings.
The B.C. Hockey League team announced Wednesday it has signed Dave Dupas to a two-year contract extension.
Now in the final year of his current contract, Dupas has agreed to terms on a deal that will carry through the 2015-16 season, with an option for the club to renew for an additional season.
"Our organization has come a long way in the past few seasons and Dave has been a huge part of that progression," said Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes. "The players have responded well to Dave as he has worked towards changing the culture and changed what it means to be a Spruce King."
Assistant coaches Colton Buffie and Jason Garneau also signed two-year extensions.
"I'm very pleased to be able to continue moving forward with this group of coaches," said Hawes. "I think that the job that has been done by Dave, Colton and Jason has been excellent and they deserve to continue to work towards bringing a championship to the city of Prince George."
This year's team is having one of the best seasons of its BCHL history. The Kings (26-16-3-2) are still in the hunt for first place in the Mainland Division, eight points behind first-place Langley Rivermen with eight games remaining.
Hired in November 2010 to replace Ed Dempsey, Dupas has had taken the Kings into the playoffs in each of his previous three full seasons. In his first season he guided the Kings to a third-place finish with 72 points in 60 games. They finished third last season with 59 points in 56 games.
The Kings host Langley in a doubleheader tonight (7 p.m.) and Friday at the Coliseum. On Sunday afternoon the Nanaimo Clippers visit the Kings.
