David Dunn and Jasmyne Morgan didn't need to buy any souvenirs at the BC Summer Games. The price for their impressive collection of loot was hard work and dedication to their sport.
At the Games, which wrapped up Sunday in Surrey, Dunn and Morgan were representing Zone 8 (Cariboo-North East) in Special Olympics swimming. Combined, they won 11 medals.
Dunn pulled seven silvers out of the pool. His second-place finishes came in the 50-metre freestyle, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley. At the Games, he stroked to eight personal-best times.
As for Morgan, she earned three silver medals and one bronze. Her silvers came in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle and she grabbed her bronze in the 100m IM.
Dunn and Morgan -- both from Prince George -- were the only Zone 8 athletes in the Special Olympics swimming competition.
Also in the pool, Kathryn Chrobot of the Prince George Barracudas had a successful Games. The highlight for Chrobot was a gold-medal performance in the 200m backstroke. As well, she zipped to a silver medal in the 400m IM. Another Barracuda, Jordan Ozcan, finished in bronze-medal position in the 100m breaststroke.
In a different watery endeavour, kayaker Gemma Hansen of Prince George paddled to a silver medal in the girls open skills competition. Hansen also teamed up with Ryan Bennett, Josiah Fisher and Meryeta O'Dine to claim bronze in the K-4 500m race.
In athletics, Carlee Campbell of the Prince George Track and Field Club leaped to a bronze medal in high jump and the boys 4x100m relay team earned bronze on the track. In all other team sports, Zone 8 was kept off the medal podium.
The next BC Summer Games will be held in Nanaimo in 2014.
