B.C. was ranked No. 1 heading into the Western Canada Games women's volleyball tournament in Fort McMurray but Hallie Drezet was worried about Alberta.
Turns out, Drezet's concerns were legitimate.
Alberta pounded out a five-set match victory Friday over B.C., winning 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 15-12) sending the girls from B.C. to their first loss. Alberta went on to defeat Manitoba 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-21) to remain atop the standings at 4-0.
Drezet, a 16-year-old from Prince George, plays libero for the B.C. squad.
B.C. swept Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) in an evening match Friday to improve to 3-1. B.C. will finish out the round-robin today at 10 a.m. PDT against Manitoba.
Playoffs begin today at 3:45 p.m. PDT with the first-versus-fourth match, followed at 4:30 p.m. by the second-versus-third match.
In other Prince George results from the Games, Hannah Esopenko was third in her 200-metre butterfly heat Friday, finishing in 2:18.45, the sixth-quickest heat time, but failed to advance to the final.
Esopenko, 15, won a silver medal Thursday in the 200m breaststroke.
She's entered in today's 200m individual medley.
Special Olympics swimmer David Dunn placed sixth in the 50m freestyle Friday in 33.91 seconds and was seventh in the 100m backstroke, clocking 1:38.81.
The 23-year-old Dunn is entered in today's 50m breaststroke event.
