B.C. evened the score against Alberta in the women's volleyball tournament at the Western Canada Summer Games in Fort McMurray Sunday.
Days after suffering its lone defeat to their top rivals in round-robin play, B.C., which includes 16-year-old libero Hallie Drezet and head coach Spencer Reed from Prince George, rebounded with a straight-set victory against Alberta to win the gold medal.
Alberta posted a perfect 5-0 round-robin record, which included a five-set match victory Friday over top-ranked B.C., winning 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 15-12).
In the cross-over games, B.C. edged Saskatchewan 3-2 in another five-set match to reach the gold medal final, while Alberta upended Manitoba.
Saskatchewan beat Manitoba 3-0 to secure the bronze medal, while B.C. won all three sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-17) for gold.
In other Prince George results from the Games, 15-year-old swimmer Hannah Esopenko, who earlier won a silver medal in the 200-metre breaststroke added to her medal haul on the weekend.
She captured a bronze medal Saturday's 100-metre breaststroke with a time of one minute, 10.69 seconds.
She clocked 2:17.70 to claim the bronze in the 200m individual medley.
Special Olympics swimmer David Dunn, 23, placed fifth in the 50m breaststroke, clocking 40.68 seconds.
