Cupp, a 50-year-old local paddler, won the men's solo title during Two Rivers Canoe Club invitational races on the weekend. The key moment in Cupp's Saturday victory happened a short distance from the starting area at Cottonwood Island Park.

"There's a turn that we all had to make about 10 minutes into the race," he said. "We had to go around a little sand bar to head back up the Fraser and a bunch of boats got jammed on it. I snuck through, kind of cleared everybody. I managed to stay out of that mess and I kind of had clear sailing the rest of the way."
