Haley Black and Josiah Binema weren't quite fast enough to earn national team spots at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria.
But given the chance to see how they stacked up against the best in the country they set new standards of excellence as members of the Prince George Barracudas Swim Club.
Black broke a club record in the 50-metre butterfly while finishing 29th overall in 28.61 seconds, while Binnema set two club records, finishing 30th in the 100m backstroke in 1:00.89 and 32nd in the 100m fly in 56.86.
Binnema was also 36th in the 200m backstroke in 2:11.76. Black competed in five other events. She was 34th in 100m back (1:05.47), 30th in 400m individual medley (5:06.02), fifth in the 100m fly B-final (1:02.30); 35th in 200m back (2:24.34), and 22nd in 200m fly (2:21. 75).

The four-day meet which wrapped up Saturday was a qualifying event for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, July 23-Aug. 4 and for the Pan-Pacific championships in Gold Coast, Australia, Aug. 12-26. Ryan Cochrane of Victoria, a two-time Olympic medalist, won three gold medals at the event.
Also in Victoria, Brittany MacLean of Etobicoke, Ont., set a new Canadian record in the women's 800m free with a time of 8:24.91. That beat the old mark of 8:27.59 set in 2005 by Brittany Reimer of Victoria.
The Barracudas host their annual three-day Dental Moose Meet starting this Friday at 5:40 p.m., in the 50-metre pool Prince George Aquatic Centre.
