Cross-country skiing cup set for Otway

The new snow that fell on the weekend is great news for organizers of the first provincial cross-country ski race of the season later this week at Otway Nordic Centre. The 2015 Teck B.C. Cup No. 1, hosted by the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club from Jan.

The new snow that fell on the weekend is great news for organizers of the first provincial cross-country ski race of the season later this week at Otway Nordic Centre.

The 2015 Teck B.C. Cup No. 1, hosted by the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club from Jan. 3 to 4, features close to 200 athletes of all ages from around the province competing in various classic and free technique style races.

"So far 192 people have registered and the late entry deadline is until noon on Wednesday [Dec. 31]," said race co-ordinator Cal Benson. "We have enough snow at Otway now and we'll use the courses we plan on using."

Official training goes from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Home Hardware Classic technique sprints qualification round begins Saturday at 9 a.m. The qualification round determines seeding positions for the afternoon heats.

The Home Hardware Classic Technique Sprint Heats follow from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The weekend wraps up with the RHB Schmitz de Grace Free Technique race on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with an interval start.

The Teck B.C. Cup is open to boys and girls ranging in age from six-years-old at the atom level, all the way up to 18 and 19-years-old in the junior men and women's levels who will ski various distances.

There are open under-23 men's and women's categories, as well as a variety of master male and female divisions. There is also an open para-nordic division.
