Brett Zarowny and Ty Edmonds combined for a 22-save shutout as the Prince George Cougars remain undefeated in WHL preseason action.
The Cougars beat the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-0 at the Edmonton Oil Kings invitational tournament in St. Albert, Alta., on Sunday.
Zarowny, 17, played the first half of the game for the Cougars before being replaced by the 16-year-old Edmonds. Both goalies stopped 11 pucks. In comparison the Cougars fired 43 shots at Tigers' goalies Dawson MacAuley and Kellan Williams.
Prince George held the edge in power plays as the Tigers took nine minor penalties compared to the Cougars' three. The Cats scored twice with the man advantage.
Devon Fordyce, the 18-year-old sophomore, didn't dress for either of the Cats' games in St. Albert.
Chase Witala led the way offensively for the Cougars with two goals and an assist. The 17 year old was also a plus-3. Troy Bourke had a pair of assists while defenceman Dallas Ehrhardt had a power-play goal and a helper.
John Odgers, 19, wore the 'C' for the Cougars in the game with Bourke, Ehrhardt and 15-year-old Brad Morrison wearing A's. Dan Gibb, who wore the C in the 6-3 win over the Red Deer Rebels, sat out Sunday's game. Alex Forsberg, Jake Mykitiuk, Jarrett Fontaine and Jordan Tkatch also had seats in the press box.
The Cougars return from their Alberta trip Sunday night to prepare for their first home exhibition games against the Edmonton Oil Kings at CN Centre on Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m. A rookie-laden Oil Kings squad was smoked 8-2 Saturday night by the Swift Current Broncos with 15-year-old Patrick Dea in net for all eight goals.
The Oil Kings face the Rebels in the final tune-up Sunday in St. Albert. When they come to Prince George the Oil Kings will likely have a roster comparable to the one that advanced to the Memorial Cup last May.
