Before they hit the ice the Prince George Cougars will hit the links this week for charity.
Past and present members of the Western Hockey League club will be at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club on Thursday and Friday for the inaugural Prince George Cougars Alumni Hospital Golf tournament. The funds raised from the two-day event will go to support Spirit of the North for the local hospital.
The golf portion of the event takes place Friday with registration at 9 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11. But first, an auction will be held Thursday, 7-9 p.m. at the PGGCC, for participants to bid on a Cougars alumni or for one of the returning veterans to join their foursome on the course the next day.
In addition to the players returning for the 2012-13 season people will have the chance to bid on the following alumni to join their golf team: Dan Hamhuis (Vancouver Canucks), Nick Drazenovic (Columbus Blue Jackets), Eric Hunter (Lake Erie Monsters, AHL), Ty Wishart (Bridgeport Sound Tigers, AHL), Ronald Petrovicky (New York Rangers), Justin Cox (draft pick of Dallas in 1999), Sena Acolatse (Worchester Sharks, AHL), Dan Baum (draft pick of Edmonton in 2001), Jesse Dudas (draft pick of Columbus in 2006), Garrett Thiessen (University of Saskatchewan), Chris Falloon (University of Manitoba), Greg Gardner (University of Alberta), Tyler Brough, 1996-99, Cody Carlson, 2010-2012 and Spencer Asuchuk, 2009-12.
Everyone at Thursday night's event will have a chance at a shot for a hole in one to win $10,000 in gift certificates to be shared among the winning team at a variety of restaurants in Prince George.
The big prize in Thursday's live auction is chance to bid on a West Jet trip to the Mayan Rivera, valued at more than $2,500.
During the golf tournament Friday one lucky person will have their name drawn for a shot at one million dollars by sinking a hole-in-one on hole No. 10.
The day will finish off with a barbecue dinner where trophies and gifts will be awarded to the winners and the prize hole winners.
Meet and Greet: On Thursday between 4:45-6 p.m. at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club fans of the Cougars will have a chance to meet, take photos and chat with past and current members of the Cougars. The Cougars management team will also be in attendance.
