Cougars one win from earning bye

As always, two wins is the goal. But, when the Cariboo Cougars step onto the ice for a doubleheader against the South Island Thunderbirds, they'll do so knowing that one victory will be enough to give them a first-round bye in the B.C.

But, when the Cariboo Cougars step onto the ice for a doubleheader against the South Island Thunderbirds, they'll do so knowing that one victory will be enough to give them a first-round bye in the B.C. Hockey Major Midget League playoffs. In the second round -- the best-of-three semifinals -- the Cougars would also be rewarded with home-ice advantage.

"It would be huge," said Cariboo head coach Trevor Sprague. "It would give us an extra week to practice and rest up and be more prepared going into the playoffs."

The Cougars will skate against the Victoria-based Thunderbirds tonight (7:15) and Sunday (8 a.m.) at Kin 1. The Cats, with a 24-9-3 record, are currently in second place in the 11-team league and are just two points behind the first-place Vancouver Northwest Giants (25-8-3). Counting this weekend, both have four games left in the regular season.
