The Prince George Cougars made North Vancouver product Jansen Harkins the second overall pick Thursday at the 2012 WHL bantam draft in Calgary.
Harkins, five-foot-11, 160-pounds, played bantam with the North Shore Winterclub Winterhawks last season, collecting 68 goals and 122 points.
The Cougars needed to trade up to acquire Harkins, swapping their third overall selection for the Prince Albert Raiders second pick in the first round. The Raiders will also receive the Cats' third-round pick in the 2013 draft.
Harkins is the son of Todd Harkins, who plated 10 season of professional hockey, including stints with the Calgary Flames and Hartford Whalers.
Prince George then traded the 11th overall pick (from Regina in the Martin Marincin trade), the rights to Jujhar Khaira and a third-round selection to the Everett Silvertips for the seventh pick overall, Jari Ericcson and a conditional fourth-round pick. With the seventh pick, the Cats took centre Brad Morrison of Kelowna.
In the second round (24th selection) the Cougars picked up Saskatoon defenceman Tate Olson and with the 43rd pick added Winnipeg forward Aaron Boyd.
In the third round (62nd pick) the Cougars took Shane Collins a defenceman from Rosetown, Sask.
The Cougars also acquired 20-year-old defenceman Dallas Ehrhardt from the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for 19-year-old defenceman Reid Jackson and a seventh round pick in 2013. Ehrhardt, a Calgary native, played in 67 games with the Warriors last season scoring a career-high four goals and 22 points along with 78 penalty minutes. He had three points in 14 playoff games.
